What Did They Do Before Dr. Oz?

Now that I am out of work, I end up being exposed to more day-time TV. I sit in front of the tube while I'm eating breakfast and lunch so it's hard to avoid medical/health oriented programming.  Last week Dr. Oz had some new diet expert on who has a new theory about food combining and how our diets mess up our hormones and destine us to be fat.  She was stick thin -- and she has a book out.  It would seem that any time we are given new break-through information, it is from someone who is trying to sell us something.  Am I the only one who is sick of this???

From my postings, it's obvious that we eat a generally healthy diet and that we are active. Can't that be enough?  We like to eat and our goal is to be well fed, responsibly, with the aim to live long healthy lives.  Is it really that important that we look thin?  I am so far away from ever looking thin again, that I've given up caring.  It's not that I've given up -- it's that I don't buy a bogus message motivated my commerce.  Someone who wants to sell us books, programs, food, advice, web-services, etc.

I am overweight by my BMI.  Yet my waist measurement falls under the threshold for what is considered healthy.  My waist to hip ratio puts me in the lowest/healthiest range there is.  My blood pressure is as low as it can be without bordering into unhealthy low territory.  We eat whole foods, exercise, stretch and try not to stress, never smoke, drink only moderately (OK, heavily at parties!).  But because we don't fit into the made-for-television physique form, we must be fat and unhappy.  We are the shameful Americans with thick middles!

My god honest biggest fear in life is that my husband will get sick and die or be killed in an accident.  That's it.  It is the only thing I fear.  But I can control that to a certain extent.  By making sure we eat healthy foods and exercise, we raise our life expectancy.  Fitting into a smaller pair of jeans really isn't going to be doing that much more for us.  So, I don't know about you -- but I'm willing to let that goal go!

  1. First time commenting - Hi ;o). I cannot stand Dr. Oz's show. Before his show he was more 'sound of mind', in my opinion. Fame has changed him into singing whatever tune will have the audience tune in. Blech. My DH's grandmother lived to over 100, always said doctor's know nothing on health, only how to prescribe medicine for ills. She was adamant a woman needs to weigh "enough" (she was a stout irish lady..short and cute to boot) to handle stress and sickness. She always said "how do you think I've outlived everyone I knew?!" To me, Dr. Oz is just a schmoozer and seems to be ogling half the women he has on his show. Creeps me out.

Btw, I've been a very long time reader. Thank you for inspiring me towards healthier eating and a more frugal way to do that! I started making my own pizza (baby steps with pre-made crusts)...WOW. The taste difference is amazing. Salads are next! Lol...

    1. Well, you said it all and thanks for commenting! I used to take the man seriously and now see he does more in the pursuit of making money and getting ratings.

In the summer, I don't make crust as much -- whole wheat Naan and other pre-made solutions keep the house cooler. Besides, it's what you put on top that really makes a difference!

  2. I don't watch him since he left the drs.
When I first married my current husband and for many yrs thereafter I concentrated on making the foods he grew up on. Boring!! Now I cook for the most part reflecting my background. Our cholesterol and sugar numbers reflect what the Mediterranean does, rocks is more like it!

    1. I am lucky to be married to a man who will eat anything I make. He's of Irish descent so he did not grow up on a Mediterranean diet. My mother is a first generation Greek American woman who could not cook and never made us Greek food. Once I had my own kitchen, I started with a vengeance and probably wouldn't be as diverse with my meals if I didn't have a man who approved of and helpfully commented on my meals. I ask him what he thinks of everything, then I strive to make it better -- he is focused on health too.

  3. Dr. Oz has been persona non grata in our household for quite a bit of time now. He can either scare the crap out of a person or fill one's head with such gibberish there is no way to turn. I will never be in skinny jeans again (at 66 who cares) but I am healthy and happy. That is all that is needed.
P.S. I love reading your blog.

    1. Jeanne, I am so happy to know someone actually enjoys my ramblings! Happy and healthy is tops in my book too. Skinny is impossible to maintain -- I think it's counter to good health. Glad to know others are accepting this too.

    1. Mum, here in the US, he is a "TV Doctor" -- he has his own medical sort of talk show and is the most popular medical authority of the day. You're lucky he's not an influence over on your side of the world! xx's to you too!
